San Francisco bred Producer/DJ Nick Miller, better known as Illenium, gave Illenials exactly what they came for and left them wanting more. With a sold out crowd at The Regent Theater in DTLA on a night synonymous for bad luck and misfortune, Friday May 13th brought nothing but melodic harmonies, wave crashing buildups and a pulsating dance floor.
The blend of musical worlds is what aspiring EDM artists can only dream of creating in Fruity Loops and Avid’s Protools.
There were no signs of fatigue as Illenium rounded the tail end of his first headlining tour accompanied by newcomers Said The Sky, William Black & Dreamers Delight. Illenium’s rise to notoriety began in 2014 with his ability to complement serene keys and vocals along with rearview shaking snare and bass. The blend of musical worlds is what aspiring EDM artists can only dream of creating in Fruity Loops and Avid’s Protools.
Illenium directed the crowd with live MIDI beats, while amplifying the experience of familiar remixes of Phoebe Ryan’s “Mine”, Porter Robinson’s “Sad Machine” and Kaskade’s “Disarm You”. Friday’s masterfully pieced set included strategic placements of Illenium originals both old and new. Illenium definitely mapped out the bangers and vibey synths with his fans in mind careful not to front-load or play a bottom heavy set.
An encore L.A. Illenium show is tonight, once again at The Regent, and if you don’t have tickets, don’t bother since tickets were sold out ages ago. If you’re anywhere near the Midwest come July 29th, be sure to experience Illenium at Lollapalooza in Chicago, where you’ll be sure to witness a softer side of EDM that won’t lull you to sleep.
